The Hotel Napa Valley, an Old World Inn, was built in 1874, initially as the Ladies Hall of the Napa Collegiate Institute. The building retains much of its original Italianate style even after alterations in early years. The result is a charming Victorian structure that was a delight to view as I drove around to the complimentary parking in back. Sister hotels Cabernet House and Merlot House are just steps away.
A self-check-in code I had received by text let me into the building. Arriving during the holidays provided the added benefit of seasonal decorations. Silver ornaments, gold bows, petite strands of pearls, and an ethereal cascading red ribbon garland graced a Christmas tree in the front parlor. Twinkling white lights on a hallway table surrounded Nutcracker and Father Christmas figurines along with a plaque with the words “Joy to the World.” I zeroed in shamelessly on a plate of homemade chocolate cookies, helping myself to one—okay, I admit, two—as I admired the festive surroundings.
I found my cozy accommodation up a steep narrow staircase and tucked down a hallway. The room featured vintage furnishings, luxurious bedding, and a fireplace to provide both warmth and ambiance. A jetted tub in the bathroom was an added bonus.
When hunger finally caught up to me, I ventured out on foot in search of food. There was no shortage of choices along Napa’s First Street. Ultimately, I landed at the Norman Rose Tavern and ordered a bean burger with avocado. It was an excellent choice.
I took my time strolling back to the hotel, checking out shop window displays and observing cheerful customers at other eateries. Once back at the hotel, I settled in for the evening. Getting the fireplace started gave me a bit of a challenge, but with the expert assistance of innkeeper Ariel it was working in no time.
Breakfast was included, served downstairs in the building’s wine cellar. This was an adventure in itself, getting to descend below street level into what felt like a secret hideaway with wine casks and, naturally, more holiday decorations. A sign on the stairway wall offered the perfect morning inspiration: HAPPINESS IS NOT A DESTINATION. IT IS A WAY OF LIFE. I would take that thought with me as I checked out and moved into the day. That, and memories of luxurious accommodations and exceptional hospitality.
